School of Aeronautic Science and Engineering, abbreviated as ASE, has distinct aeronautic and astronautic characteristics. ASE is dedicated to research and teaching the fundamental, prospective and engineering problem, as well as new concepts, new theory, new methods of general design, aerodynamics, structure, strength, flight dynamics, man-machine environment and control etc. of all kinds of aircraft in the atmosphere including airplane, helicopter and airship, near space vehicle and miniature aircraft.
ASE, formerly Dept. of Aeronautics of Tsinghua University, is one of the only two departments when the establishment of Beihang University. It named Department of Aircraft including two majors, i.e. Aircraft Design and Aircraft Technology. It has been changed many times, Department of Aeronautics and Engineering Mechanics since 1958, Fifth Brigade since 1972, Department of Aircraft Design and Applied Mechanics since 1989 and School of Aeronautic Science and Engineering since 2003. There are many famous experts working in ASE such as Shoue Tu, Derong Wang, Shijia Lu, Yuan Shen, Junkuai Wang, Liyi Wu, Guilian Zhang, Xingfu Xu, Huafang Xu, Qinzhi He, Ronglin Wu, Chaoli Shi and Fengpei Ye etc. They laid a solid foundation for ASE’S future development, and Shoue Tu is the first head of Department. ASE has been continuously exporting specialties and talents during Beihang University’s development history. It participated in the establishment of The Seventh Department, The Third Department, The Fourteenth Department, School of Astronautics, School of Pilot, The Institute of UAV, Department of Civil Engineering and School of Transportation Science and Engineering etc.
Since the foundation of the university, 1696 masters and 725 doctors have graduated from ASE. There are 10 academicians such as Yongzhi Wang, Faren Qi, Erjie Cui, Jialing Le, Xisheng Tang, Fuze Zhang, Jun Wang, Qunpeng Zhong, Baoqi Tao and Konghui Guo etc., and many graduates of ASE have become the youth Chief Designers and Commander in Chief such as Zhuanglong Jin, Jiajun Yuan, Yuhai Li, Guanghui Wu, Cong Sun, Changhong Tang, Yufeng Fang, Yongqin Wang, Bing Sun, Jing Wen and Dong Li etc., whose have made outstanding contributions in the National Aeronautics and Astronautics, as well as the Defense Science and Technology.
ASE has filled many scientific and technological gaps nationwide by making and launching aircrafts such as Beijing-1, the first light aircraft in China; the first High Altitude and High Speed UAV in China; target drone; BEE series light aircraft; the first coaxial rotor helicopter. BEE series once have 70% of the national light aircraft market. ASE has take part in all of the research work of the national key aeronautic projects, and it gain hundreds of national and provincial and ministerial level’s teaching and research awards including more than 20 national prizes.
There are 169 faculties, among which 48 are professors including 42 doctoral supervisors and 46 are associate professors. Full-time teachers account for 73% of all faculties and 76% youth instructors have doctoral degree. There are 5 academicians such as Yuan Shen, Zhentong Gao, Chunxuan Li, Jun Wang and Tian Li etc. and 7 Yangtze River Scholars such as Huimin Fu, Mao Sun, Jialing Yang, Yitian Gao, Zhe Wu, Jinjun Wang and Jinwu Xiang etc., whose are influential on the aeronautic fields at home and abroad. They are characterized by integrity, persistence in academic pursuits and patience in teaching, and also have many well-known lecturers including National Teaching Master, 3 National Outstanding Youth Fund winners and 8 New Century Excellent Talents.
There are 6 departments under ASE including Dept. of Aircraft, Dept. of Man-machine and Environmental Engineering, Dept. of Aerodynamics (formerly Institute of Fluid), Dept. of Aircraft structure and strength (formerly Institute of Solid), Dept. of Flight Mechanics and Flight Safety and Dept. of Dynamics and Control. In addition, another two are based on other departments, i.e. Institute of Miniature Aircraft Design and Research Center of Aviation Development Strategy.
ASE has 3 first-class disciplines and 10 second-class disciplines, and also has 3 undergraduate programs including Aircraft Design and Engineering, Aircraft Environment and Life Protection Engineering and Engineering Mechanics. Aeronautical and Astronautical Science and Technology rank No.1 and Mechanics rank No.2 in China, and both of them are the first-class national key disciplines. ASE also has 10 doctoral programs, 8 master programs and 3 postdoctoral stations. Aeronautical and Astronautical Science and Technology and Mechanics are the first-class doctoral disciplines, and Fluid Mechanics, Solid Mechanics, Aircraft Design, Man-machine and Environment Engineering, Engineering Mechanics and General and Fundamental Mechanics are the national key disciplines.
There are many laboratories, centres and bases in ASE including National Laboratory of Computational Fluid Dynamics, State School in Mechanics Course Teaching Base, National Aeronautical and Astronautical Teaching Demonstration Centre, Key Laboratory of Fluid Mechanics of Ministry of Education, Key Discipline Laboratory of the Ergonomic and Environmental Control of National Defence, Beijing Key Laboratory of Powder Technology and Beijing Mechanical Demonstration Centre, as well as Aviation Innovation & Practice Base, Plane Showroom, Teaching Experiment Centre of Fluid Mechanics, Teaching Experiment Centre of Solid Mechanics, Laboratory of Flight Mechanics and Laboratory of Environment Modeling and Simulation. Beijing Aviation Museum is also built in ASE which one of the most famous aeronautical teaching and popular science base in China.
ASE’s teaching achievement is fruitful from the 10th National Five-Plan including 2 National Teaching Achievement Prizes, 3 Teaching Achievement Prizes at the Municipal Level, 5 National Quality Courses, 5 Quality Courses of Beijing, 7 Beijing High Education Quality Textbooks, Excellent Textbook of the Commission of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense, 2 National Top 100 Doctoral Thesis and 5 Nomination Awards.
Now, ASE has about 1100 undergraduate and 1200 graduate students. About 25% undergraduate students could be recommended as the graduate student without examination, and nearly 60% would pursue graduate degree. The employment rate of undergraduate keeps above 98% in recent years, and that of graduate is 100%. Above 80% of them are employed by aeronautic, astronautic and national defence system’s companies. ASE’s students can easily find good jobs compared to other schools in Beihang University. ASE is assessed as the Scientific and Technological Activities of School for decade, and gets the first group in Student’s Extracurricular Technological Competition of Beihang Fengru Cup twice. It also is awarded the first prize in Challage Cup National University Student’s Extracurricular Technological Activity Competition many times, and many students get the first prize in National Mechanics, Mathematics, Physics and English Competitions. Model Aircraft Team of Beihang University based on ASE gets the first group and individual champion in National Aviation Model Competition from 2004 to now, and also set the record of the load game.
ASE has made great scientific research achievement from the 10th National Five-Plan, and also gains 5 national and 31 provincial awards. It gets 22 National Nature and Science Funds every year, among which National Outstanding Youth Fund and Key Project are two and seven respectively. Many key projects of China including 973 and 863, as well as the state key aircraft project are undertaken by ASE, and the first twin rotors of coaxial helicopter of China is successfully developed. The research fund of ASE reaches 220 million in 2010, and it is the first school of Beihang University which exceeds 200 million .
Now, ASE is one of the best Aeronautic schools in China, and also the important talent training base of aeronautics and astronautics and research centre. Guided by the scientific development concept, ASE will continue strengthen the disciplinary construction of aeronautic characteristics. Both of the fundamental research and engineering practice would be emphasized, and the introduction and cultivation of talents would be focused. ASE will be one of the best aeronautic school all over the world, which would benefit more to the development of national aeronautics and astronautics.
